Now that he's realised, now that it's like a thunderbolt, there's only one thing that he can think of and that's finding Laurence. It's unconscionable to think that he would do anything in this world without first talking to William Laurence about it. Even before they were what they are to each other now, it was Laurence's opinion that Granby trusted the most.

He just wishes that he could shake the sick feeling in the pit of his stomach.

Laurence was at the dock, fussing unnecessarily over some minor detail of his boat. It was such fussing, however, that ensured The Queen was one of the best kept boats to sail island waters. She may have been small, but he was inordinately proud of her. He was unaware of Granby's approach, busy knotting a length of rope.

Eventually, Laurence did look up from his work, though his hands continued knotting unaided by his eyes. He smiled at the sight of the other man and halted his progress for a moment to wave to him. Granby was not yet close enough for him to clearly see his expression. "Hello, John. How are you?"

"Not at all," he answered, setting aside the rope entirely. It was more busy work than anything else, something meant to remind him of the life he had led before the island. "Did you wish to talk?"

The air of seriousness surrounding Granby quickly spread to Laurence as well, and the smile that had been on his face faded. Casting a swift glance about the boat to be certain all was well, he returned to the dock. If they would talk it would be on equal footing. "What is it, John?"

Laurence's brow furrowed. Granby's expression and tone were utterly serious, but he was making little sense. "I am afraid I do not quite follow what you are saying."

"Of course." He came a step closer to lay a comforting, yet entirely friendly and little more, hand on the other man's shoulder. It would, he hoped, not appear to forward to an outside observer. "I do not understand. What happened with Julie?"

Laurence colored as well at the admission, ducking his head and flushing red. Then it struck him. Granby must have been afflicted with the same truthfulness Julie had suffered a week or so prior. "You do not have to tell me this, John, if you do not wish to."

"Oh." Laurence was silent for a long moment, thinking. He was fairly certain that he fully grasped Granby's words now, and he knew what that meant he must do. "And are you quite sure of those feelings?"

"I am sorry, John." Though he wasn't entirely certain now what he was sorry for. His reaction had seemed perfectly innocuous to him. "Whatever you need from me I will do my utmost to provide."

"I will not leave," Laurence vowed. Though he was struck with horrible feeling that John might leave him. If he felt such things in such a manner for Julie it would stand to reason that he would wish to focus his attentions in that new direction.

"Of course." Laurence was glad that he was no longer flushing. Such a conversation was serious and deserved a serious manner in turn. "You must do what you feel is right, John."

"I do know it, John, I do." Laurence nodded, his grip on Granby's shoulder tightening ever so slightly. He had spoken the truth when he had said that he would not leave him, no matter how painful it got. "And I know that whatever you choose go do will be the right decision."

Laurence attempted for a while to countenance the possibility of a life without Granby. But of course, he would not truly be without Granby, it would merely be a resuming of the manner of friendship they had shared before. He could only assume such endings were to be expected in relationships of such a type. "I would if it was truly what you wanted, my dear."

Laurence was silent for a long moment. As the meaning behind Granby's words became clear though he blushed a deep shade of red. "I see."

"I-- I do not know what you wish me to say, John." Laurence felt that same horrible sense of uselessness that he had experienced when Granby had chosen to speak with him when the prospect of his marriage to the Incan empress had been looming seemingly inevitably. What was he expected to do or say in the face of such a confession?

Laurence sighed. His hand had left Granby's shoulder and was now pressed rather desperately against his own forehead as if the gesture might in some way help. "I-- I do not know, John. It is something that I never would have given thought to in a million years if it had not been mentioned to me. I-- Well, having just now thought of it you can hardly expect me to answer you quite so readily."

Laurence sighed, rubbing at his temples. The fact that Granby was so distraught was only making it all the worse. "Lord, John. I do wish I knew what it is I should say. If I did I would say it, please believe that."
